Mary Pickford
Named for the Canadian-American pioneer of stage and screen, the Mary Pickford cocktail is a balanced-yet-boozy throwback to American Prohibition, and the lengths people would go to avoid that most heinous of laws. This concoction was created for Ms. Pickford in the 1920s by a bartender in Cuba, where she was vacationing with friends (including Charlie Chaplin) and generally thumbing her nose at the 18th Amendment.
Pickford was what we would call a superstar today. Some say her fame was exceeded only by Chaplin's. But as the star of 52 features and one of the original founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Pickford's place in film history is secure.
Next time the Oscars rolls around, let's all raise a glass to Mary Pickford, the face that launched this delicious cocktail.
